Hard Facts Abour Modeling

Ever have an urge to be a model as you flip through the glossy pages of Elle, Mirabella or Vogue?

Sounds pretty glamorous, and several Seattle models have made it. Home for the holidays from New York were Shelley Spafford - who models under the name Montana - and Tara Krahn; back from Italy are Debbie Griffon and Adele Taylor.

But it takes more than just being pretty to compete in the big time. A down-to-earth book, ``The Modeling Handbook,'' by Eve Matheson, was first published two years ago but now has been updated and published as an Owl Book in paperback by Henry Holt & Co. ($9.95).

In the first chapter, some of the cold facts about modeling are laid out.

``Modeling is a multimillion-dollar, closely knit business,'' Matheson writes. ``Its growth in recent years has been phenomenal. Now it is show business, with thousands clamoring to get into the act. It is riddled with rejection, disillusionment, insecurity, depression and frustration. Gossip travels like wildfire. Rumors fly around the world and ricochet back as fact. Reputations are ruined with a telephone call.

``Despite crippling odds, a few make it to the top and become superstars. The majority are devastated by disappointments and shattered dreams.''

Then Matheson comes out with some good advice on making it. She talked to some of the top models, agents, photographers and casting directors for advice. Which agencies are responsible and successful, and how to contact them, is included. She tells how to decide if you have what it takes physically and emotionally to be a model and how to avoid the pitfalls of the business.

Regional fashion markets in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia are analyzed.

About Seattle, she says:

``Seattle is a significant scouting ground for agents from all over the world.

``There are several reputable agencies and modeling schools in the area. This city is an ideal place to learn about the modeling profession and launch a career. It has excellent liaisons with other American agencies and with top foreign agencies.''
